Chicken Up @ Holiday Villa, JB

Everyone is crazy for korean fried chicken in jB, Chicken Up is one of the hottest restaurant in JB for Korean fried chicken. You need to queue for quite a while especially during lunch and dinner time. (Im so hungry right now, damn)

Chicken up is attached to the building of Holiday Villa Hotel. It is at the first floor, ground floor is some indian restaurant. Where is Holiday Villa? It is jut behind KSL shopping mall, diagonal to Holiday Plaza.

It was very packed during dinner.

Left: Crispy Up Mega Chic   (RM 26.90)      Right: Spicy Yangyum Mega Chic (RM 28.90)

Crispy Up Mega Chic is the original flavour, not much special. Spicy Yangyum is cooked with korean hot sauce, thumbs up! when having the first piece, it was not that spicy, you will know how spicy it is for the second one and onwards! There are altogether four flavours of the korean fried chicken, there are soy sauce flavour and one more is less spicy flavour. They also have menu for fried chicken wings only, rather than the half chicken. They do provide plastic gloves for customers who would like to use theirs hands to eat the fried chicken and they place a little dustbin for customers to throw the chicken bones, so the table wont be so messy.

Ugly Tang Stew (RM 38.00)

Ugly Tang Stew is wat we like to call 部队锅. It is made of kimchi soup, ham, smoked duck, sausages, mushrooms and noodles. Nice, really love the flavourful kimchi soup.

The small red “sauce” is not chili sauce! well, although they really look like chili sauce in the picture, they are not!

IMG_8413_副本

Watermelon Soju (RM 48.00)

Dang Dang! The must try in Chicken Up is the watermelon soju, fresh watermelon juice with soju served in an empty watermelon shell. Did not know that soju can match with watermelon so well, ice cold sweet watermelon juice with slightly bitter soju, refreshing! They also have peach soju, pear soju and pineapple soju.

I am gonna make this watermelon soju at home next time, hehe!

Topokki Cheese and Seafood (RM 28.90)

Super cheesy topokki! Normally the topokki (korean rice cake) we have in korean bbq restaurant is more to sweet and spicy. This cheesy, stringy topokki is more to spicy and salty, Inside there are squid, prawns, mussels, alot of vermicelli, topokki! Anyway, I still have preference on the traditional topokki served in the other korean bbq restaurants, because this dish is abit too salty for me due to the amount of cheese inside.

If you love very cheesy, stringy sauce, it will be a good choice.

HAVN Restaurant & Bar @ Kulai, Johor

HAVN Restaurant & Bar is located at Kulai, it is renovated from a detached factory thus the restaurant is very spacious inside. Heard from my fren that HAVN is danish which means “Harbour”, the pronunciation is similar to “half”.

A nice place to hang out with friends for gathering or some tea or coffee, or some beer at night.  The big space and sufficient tables which cater big capacity will make you feel very comfortable even when there are a lot of ppl in the restaurant.

They have a patio for outdoor dining as well. The place is so huge that it is sufficient for holding huge private event.

IMG_2518_副本

Bar and Juice Counter

HAVN serves a very typical menu of western food. I think most of the food eg. something to share, burger and pizza will go well with beer in a lovely evening, so probably I should drop by for a beer in the evening next time.

IMG_2528_副本

Eight Secret from the Far East Tea & Cranberry Walnut Cake  (photo credit: my lovely BFF)

The tea is a mix flavour of fruity, tinge of bitterness, tinge of sourness, some flower frangrace, well a very exotic tea. Haha! That really depends on individual taste bud whether you will like it, but we kind of like it. The cake is not in the menu, but you can hand pick it near the bar counter.

IMG_2526_副本

The Cranberry Walnut Cake is good, the texture is firm. Fruity cranberry flavour with crunchy walnut is one good combination. Most importantly, it is not too sweet, just nice!

IMG_2532_副本  IMG_2535_副本

Carbonara

Carbonara is one of my favourite pasta (most frequently-ordered pasta whenever I go, so I can guess it can be considered as “favourite, lol!) However the carbonara here is disappointing, it was not so creamy, but watery and flavour was diluted. And I dun really like the sprinkle of cauliflower on top. After finishing my carbonara, there was still a pool of sauce in the plate.

IMG_2533_副本  IMG_2534_副本

Seafood Bake Rice

Seafood including clams, prawns, squid and etc, the rice is baked with Neapolitan sauce with cheese on top. The sauce is heavy-flavoured, quite salty. As you can see from the picture the rice was drenched in the sauce, thus this dish is disappointing too, it was too salty.

IMG_2530_副本

Grilled Chicken Chop (with Black Pepper Sauce)

As from the picture the chicken chop might appear to be abit too dry and hard, but in fact it is just nice. The purple cabbage salad was good. The grilled chicken chop was just an average on cafe standard.

Last but not least, my friend said the pizza there was not bad, so probably worth a try. Anyway this place is still new, they are still improving, the food might get better in the future.

Maio Italian Fine Dining @ JB

It has been a while for me to post some restaurants that I have been visiting, although I am still out of all places to try good food! (so I can never ever slim down, sad case T^T)

This time we found a rather quiet, secluded Italian fine dining – Maio Italian Restaurant which is hiding behind M-Suite Hotel near Danga Bay, Johor Bahru. The restaurant can be access via M-Suite Hotel or you can go through a small road beside M Suite Hotel to reach its private parking. It is a small bungalow surrounded by a “mini jungle” or garden.

IMG_0276_副本

As this was a gathering and birthday celebration for my cousin and friend, I had pre-booked a table for 12 persons. It was a 12-person candle light dinner, haha! The place and decoration of the restaurant is romantic with dim light and very peaceful atmosphere. The main hall of the restaurant is not big, so we conquer the whole restaurant that night, haha!

IMG_0372_副本

So we brought our own birthday cakes for the birthday boy and girl. The restaurant put the fireworks on the cake as a candle for us, and the whole restaurant staff came out together with the cakes singing birthday song! (Fireworks really works nice with birthday cakes and song!) The reason why we always bought birthday cakes outside rather than directly order from the restaurant that we dine in is becos we always have a very seasonal preference for cakes.

First we have Humble Beginnings’mille crepe (becos we were so in love with it, we bought it whenever there were birthday celebration and whenever we felt like eating), then we had too much of the mille crepe until we were kind of sick of it, we shifted to Mine Cake Shop’s yam-flavoured layer cake with different designer outlook (although the cake looked differently outside,  but the content is still yam cake. They also sell yam-flavoured cake in small row,so yea of cos then we had it whenever we felt like again. so until we were so sick of it, we shifted again). Then we changed to Moonlight’s red velvet and some other cheesecake. Then this time we have our craze over Verbena’s fruit cake, oreo cheese and pandan kaya. They are really nice!!!

IMG_0279_副本

Candle light dinner with the little handsome boy! (He is too handsome so I cant show you his face!!!)

IMG_1082_副本

Onion Soup

Italian bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil is the typical appetizer for Italian cuisine, I love the warm bread especially! We have also ordered the onion soup and mushroom soup. Both soups were tasty and flavourful. It was full of small mushroom chunks in mushroom soup. And of cos, Onion soup was full of onions (haha! very lame!) However for me the onion soup was a bit too salty. But! the pastry on top is crispy, it tasted nice in dipping into onion soup and tasted nice while eating it plain. Please take note that the soup is served in a big portion. For me if I finish one pot of soup by myself, I will not be able to eat anything else anymore. So my advice is that “soup is always for sharing”.

IMG_1085_副本

Aglio Olio with cookie stick + topping: BBQ Chicken

There are a variety of toppings for the aglio olio, there is a choice of plain aglio olio as well. The aglio olio tasted above average than some very expensive cafes in Johor Bahru. The best part is the BBQ Chicken, they have the best BBQ Chicken slices or chunks in JB. Tender and  succulent, thoroughly marinated as it tasted flavourful not just surface but the meat inside.

IMG_0293_副本

Pulled Beef Carbonara with asparagus, cookie stick

This is a very cheesy and creamy dish, if you really love slimy creamy cheesy stuff then you can try it. If you are not, then better dun order this unless this is for sharing cos if you dun like extra creamy cheesy food, then it might be hard for you to finish the whole plate. Overall, the dish is quite average but the asparagus here is so damn nicely cooked. It is not raw, but still crunchy and juicy and no bitter taste! (Frankly speaking, I can barely find restaurants which cook better asparagus than Maio in Johor Bahru so far)

IMG_0294_副本

Lamb Shank

The lamb shank is considered as average, as normal very soft. Some people do not like the meat smell of lamb or mutton, then I suggest that you may opt for their other selection such as angus beef steak. Becos this is lamb shank there is of cos lamb smell (some people just like the meat smell).  Their angus beef steak is on with certain standard as well. And, there is asparagus again!

IMG_1086_副本

Lamb Rack

The meat is firm and juicy, and I prefer this more than lamb shank. I prefer the sauce of this more than the sauce of lamb shank too. and no doubt, this is slightly more expensive than lamb shank.

IMG_0302_副本

It is a “going to finish all food” photo. Look to the left of the picture, im actually trying to say that their pizza is very good too! haha! A variety of pizzas are available and a selection of toppings for the pizza can be added. The pizza is thin-crusted and it can be taken as a delicious appetizer through sharing.

IMG_0307_副本

Last but not least, we are served with Italian dessert- Almond Pana Cotta! It is really sweet, it at first tasted something similar as Creme Brulee just without the caramel on top. Although It is really sweet, do try it slowly. Although the texture is similar to Creme Brulee but it taste differently when you have more. The aroma of almond slowly appeared and filled your mouth (although it is still very sweet but I love almond! I just do not have a sweet tooth)

** The price is average for fine dining, considered as relatively affordable. Average price  is about RM 100++ to RM 150++ per person for our dinner plus drinks.

Maio Italian Restaurant
Address: Jalan Bertingkat Skudai, 80200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
(This is the number of M Suite Hotel, however you still can make your reservation through this number. I have lost the restaurant manger ‘s contact. Do take note that when you are booking through this number, please mention that you are booking for Maio Italian, becos there is another Maio Mediterranean restaurant inside M Suite Hotel)
Operating Hours:
Lunch: 11.00am – 2.30pm ( They have lunch set as well, which price ranged from RM 40++ to RM 60 or 70++, cant really recall)

潮苑点心 chaw yuan dimsum@ Nusa Bestari

Another good dimsum restaurant at Nusajaya!
They not only provide dim sum but also other chinese food and seafood.

In my opinion, this is d most special dim sum here. 芋头流沙包 (yam paste bun), I can barely find this in other places. They also serves the 黄金流沙包 (salted egg yolk paste bun). These two are “lava” bun, Be careful when you are eating, it is burning hot lava flowing out. :p

There are quite a variety of dim sum there too. Steamed ones, fried ones, carrot cakes and all (typical varieties available at dim sum restaurant).
(oops! the xiao long bao was 3 per serving, haha! someone was too hungry n stole it)
Generally the dim sum here taste above average. Worth for trying and worth for going again (well, I myself have been visiting for many times)

Palsaik Koean BBQ 八色烤肉

Korean BBQ is very popular in JB and there are like hundreds shops around.

Everybody just loves Korean BBQ, especially meat lovers!

There is a relatively new Korean BBQ in town- Palsaik Korean BBQ (八色烤肉). The name of the restaurant directly points out that they offer  eight colours of pork belly for BBQ! The eight colours/flavours ranged from non-spicy to very spicy one. I personally prefer the herb one as the meat is with some light but nice aroma. The meat is fresh, vegetable is fresh, but there are not many choices on the menu as compared to other Korean BBQ restaurants around the area. The restaurant looks very clean and kind of spacious. The presentation of the food is very attractive. The food priced moderately higher than surrounding Korean BBQ restaurants, however it becomes very crowded and reservation is strongly suggested during friday and saturday nights.

Untitled

mmexport1438216464125_副本

We ordered the premium set of Korean BBQ which costs about RM 200++. It was shared by 4 people and it was just nice (becos we have two big eaters!)

IMG_20150711_194743_副本

Each table is compulsory to order at least for a set. Other than the sets, the choices for side dishes are very little, less than 10 items i think (mainly rice, noodles, porridge or some mushrooms).There are three types of sets.

  1. 3 colours (for 2 persons)
  2. 8 colours (for 3-4 persons)
  3. premium set (for 3-4 persons)

(photo taken from other place)

For the 3 colours, there is an option to choose either kimchi or grilled deodeok while grilled deodeok is served with every premium set ( there are only 4 pcs of deodeok for premium set, which means each person will get one only). What is deodeok? It is also called Lanceolate. is a flowering plant. It originates in East Asia. It is a variety of bonnet bellflower. The roots are used in Korean cuisine. In Chinese, it is called 沙参. Give it a try, it is abit crunchy and tasty.

IMG_20150711_195743_副本

I love their vegetables, they were so fresh. They provide different varieties of salad leaves to wrap the grilled pork belly such as red and green coral lettuce, romaine lettuce and mint leaves. There are also raw garlic, green chili and enoki mushroom.

阿峰肉骨茶@ 笨珍/ Ah Hong Bak Kut Teh @Pontian

IMG_20150201_120905_副本

Grill/BBQ on Paper @ Sutera, JB

A good recommendation for meat lovers!!!!!

Korean BBQ and Grill Buffet 金韩村纸上烤肉 at Sutera! Since it is buffet, u can order as many as u want, but take the portion that u will be able to finish, DUN WASTE FOOD!

I think this is the first Korean BBQ buffet in JB, and one special thing about this restaurant is that you grill your food on a piece of paper! Interesting concept! Are you wondering why the paper dun burn? Seriously I also have no idea.

IMG_20150104_200712_副本

The buffet is based on order, you need to tick the order slip and pass it to the staff and just wait for the raw food to be served. This BBQ buffet is based on self-service, you gonna have to grill the food yourself. A variety of sauces is available at the center of the restaurant, you can mix and match your very own sauce. The restaurant offers a great variety of food, different parts of porks, beef, chicken with different flavours. Some are original, some are marinated in spicy sauce, kimchi sauce, black pepper and etc. Other than meats, they also offer seafood like fresh prawns, squids. They also have some cooked food such as fried rice, bimbimbap, grilled fish, fried meatballs and etc. They also have kimchii pot on the menu which is included in the buffet. Do take note that the soup pot is only offered on standard size and it is a very huge pot.

Chicken, pork, prawns~ ready to start grilling!

BBQ in process

Overall, it is a very worth-eating buffet. The buffet is limited to two hours. I personally think that the price is quite reasonable:-

Although the Korean BBQ is not so authentic as normal Korean BBQ shops owned by Koreans in JB, the taste of the food is still considered as above average, the ingredients are fresh. The food offered in this restaurant is more like fusion of Korean BBQ and Chinese food. And some note for ladies, as usual for dining at Korean BBQ restaurants, your hair gonna stink for like a day. Hahahaha! There are two or three tables outdoor, maybe it is a good choice to sit outside too!

Last but not least, drink more water after eating BBQ!

Sibu Island @ Johor, Malaysia

I love to go islands!!! I love the sun, love the blue blue skies!

Love the breeze, love the sound of the waves!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This time I went to Sibu Island at Johor. This short trip was a weekend getaway for me and my friends! We would like to have a really peaceful weekend and just to relax, do nothing and to be free! away from the world!
SOoooo, since I was the organizer and everyone was just easy, I got to choose the resort!
Normally, people will choose to stay at Sibu Island Resort, but in the end I found this simple, very raw-look resort to stay!
Rimba Resort
Why? First, becos I dinwanna go places that are very commercialized. Second, I saw this on their website:
The bar is open until the last guest goes to bed – wheelbarrow taxi’s available!
Wow! “Wheelbarrow taxi” idea is just too cool! Hahaha! I was really attracted by this very simple and south-east asian kind of style of the place! All the buildings there are made of what we called “atap” leaves and bamboos! My very personal preference for holidays!
Rimba Resort Bar
Night look of the bar
Day look of the bar
Interior of the bar
The bar is open from morning until night! Whole-day long! As you can see from the pictures above, the bar is a very relaxing and comfortable place and this was where we hang out most of our time during our stay at Sibu Island. There are bean bags, floor cushions and normal chairs all around. You can stand to drink, you can sit to drink or you can lie down to drink! We had our breakfast with healthy fruit juice there~ With the hot sunny afternoon and evening, we had our cold beers there. and we ended our nights there with card games and wines! Best weekend getaway ever!
Well, other than the bar. I chose this resort becos of the open-concept of its chalet!
The Chalet we stayed @ RImba Resort
Chalet @Rimba Resort
IMG_5991_副本
Why do I say open-concept? There are doors and windows…but no lock. The doors and windows basically are only covered by curtains. Anyone on the island can walk into your chalet anytime and same goes for the toilets! But somehow it is quite safe cos not many people on the island other than the resort workers and a few guests. The toilet is not fully covered up to ceiling so you might be able to enjoy some outside views while using the toilet or showering. The first day afternoon when we just arrived, there was snake hanging out at the roof at our toilet! Scary right? Haha! This place is still so natural!Let’s just be close to the nature!
DO TAKE NOTE that all resort workers are foreigners, they are from all over the world such as Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, so you have to be able to communicate in English to get proper service! During our stay, we are the only group of Asians, other guests are tourists from UK, Denmark and etc.
sibu island
Beach @ Rimba Resort, Sibu Island
We were lucky that the three days during our trips were all sunny days, be more specific, crazy hot sunny days!
I felt that the temperature there might be around 40 degree Celsius (just my estimation), so do rmb to bring sunblocks there! Although it was so hot, but I did really enjoy the sun and super nice blue sky!
Sunny sibu islandSibu Rimba Resort
We literally did nothing there, no alarm clock to wake us up in the morning. There is no need to think what to do next and rush to do. We just wandered around, read some books, chit chat, went to the beach….We once cracked our head to think of what to do there and in the end, the conclusion is DOING NOTHING. A break from all the things to do.
IMG_5992_副本Sibu Island Msia
Another thing I like this resort, there are books available to read. You can bring your own book there to read, once you finished reading your book, you can leave it there for the future guests to read. If you take a book from the resort and unable to finish it during your stay, you can take the book with you! The joy of sharing~
By Grace Dessert @ Tmn Pelangi, JB
This time I wanna recommend my all time favourite dessert house- By Grace!
This is so far the only dessert house that I will visit repeatedly in JB (except those traditional chinese dessert shops).
The decoration and atmosphere of the shop is very homey, cosy and comfortable. The shop owner has one small corner for their collection of dolls and small toys from their travelling! The desserts here are very special, however a lil bit pricey ^^
The desserts are all house-made, the typical dessert here comes in a set: one scoop of house-made icy cold ice cream and once melting hot lava cake. Take bit of the ice cream and bit of the lava cake, put them together into your mouth! Imagine how the different texture and different temperature of food merging in your mouth. Savour the sweet, cold and warm at the same time!
There are many different favours offered in the menu! It was offered in set which was designed to be matched for the best taste, one ice cream and one lava cake.
By Grace Dessert
The day’s special dish: red date ice cream and lava cake (forgot the flavour of the lava cake)
By Grace dessert
The special dessert platter with different flavours which costs RM 100++.
The serving of the dessert platter is very special too! It was served on a transparent acrylic board!
( Do you see the blue ice cream? It is sea salt ice cream and it is really salty! Imagine the taste of cold salty ice cream with melting hot creamy lava cake!)
By Grace dessert
Some other desserts with ice creams!
By Grace Main CourseBy Grace Main Course
They also offer some main courses like egg benedict and chinese braised pork meat with bun (扣肉包)with wild rocket!
This is a very lovely hangout place of mine and my friends, because of good food and cozy atmosphere!
Warakuya Japanese Restaurant 和乐屋 @ JB
I am a frequent customer to Warakuya Japanese Restaurant (和乐屋). Few years ago it was a small restaurant at Pelangi, today it has its branch at sutera. Another new branch is going to be open at Austin.
Love to have lunch or dinner with friends there not just because the food is nice, the atmosphere is good. However, I prefer early reservation due to sometimes, really have to queue for quite some time outside especially during dinner time at the Sutera branch!
They serve hot towel once you sit down at your table. I really appreciate this extra service! Although it is just something small or unimportant, but this hot towel and hot green tea really make me refreshed. Feel that all that tiredness and unpleasant emotions at work are all gone!
sushi
Classic sushi at Warakuya! Cheese and Prawn, Duck and Mango, mentai salmon (forgot whether it is salmon or other ingredient), haha! ^0^
sakae clams
I order this dish everytime I go Warakuya. Steamed clams with wine, erm~ super delicious! (But sometimes it is out of stock if I go too late T^T)
salmon sashimi
Salmon Sashimi! (but I dun like wasabi >_<)
